What is VAT?

VAT, or Value-Added Tax, is a tax applied to the purchase of goods and services. While the consumer pays the tax, it is collected and remitted to the government by the business that sells the goods or services. VAT rates vary between countries and sometimes between product types. In many European countries, the standard VAT rate is around 20–25%, with reduced rates on items like food, transport, and cultural services.
